Shaping starts with the base<\/strong><\/p>\n

so today, I thought I would share not only how to square the base of\u00a0a basket, but also why it is important to square the base.<\/p>\n

First, what does it mean to square the base of a basket?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Squaring a base really means making sure that\u00a0the corners are ‘square’, or\u00a0 90\u00b0.\u00a0So you can ‘square’ a rectangular or square base.

How do you\u00a0square a base?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, you could get out your old school protractor, but there is an easier way. \u00a0All you need is a tape measure or a ruler.<\/p>\n

The corners will be square if all three of these are true:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Both horizontal edges must be the same length.<\/li>\n
  2. Both vertical edges must be the same length<\/li>\n
  3. Both diagonals must be the same length<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \"Squaring<\/a><\/p>\n

    Note: the horizontal edges and vertical edges may or<\/em> may not be equal lengths.<\/p>\n

    When your base is squared, lock the base. This may not seem important and you\u00a0can<\/em>\u00a0weave the sides\u00a0without locking the base, but\u00a0keeping the base squared is an important part of the control you need to get a beautifully shaped basket.\u00a0I suggest locking the base\u00a0by twining all around the base with a length of waxed linen or strong thread, catching every stake,\u00a0if you struggle to control the base or the first rows of weaving.     Why is it\u00a0important\u00a0to square the base?<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. It is easier to upset your stakes and weave straight up the sides (as you would in a market basket) if the stakes are already trained to line up.<\/li>\n
    2. If you are weaving straight up, having a squared base will help the basket to sit flat.<\/li>\n
    3. If you are weaving a cathead base, you must have a squared base for the basket to sit on all four corners. \u00a0If the base is not squared, no matter how much you manipulate the basket it will want to sit on three of the four corners.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      So — take a few minutes to square your base and lock it before you weave up the sides, I think you will be happy with the results.<\/p>\n
