I used to dislike lashing. <!--more-->For a while I tried finishing a basket anyway I could without lashing a rim, but I always went back to the lashed rim. I love the classic look. Over time I&#8217;ve grown to enjoy lashing &#8211;\u00a0mostly\u00a0because finishing a basket gives me sense of accomplishment, but also because I have acquired a lot of practice and some great lashing tools. So I am going to review my favorite lashing tools and talk about starting and ending the lasher. (There are so many lashing techniques I&#8217;ll leave those for future posts.)<\/p>\n<p>The best\u00a0way to start and end a lasher is to hairpin it over the side of the basket &#8211; under the rim and the rim filler.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rim.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-15078\" src=\"http:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rim-300x290.png\" alt=\"rim\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rim-300x290.png 300w, https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rim-36x36.png 36w, https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rim-450x435.png 450w, https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/rim.png 515w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This gives a secure anchor for the\u00a0lashing. When this technique is repeated at the end of the lashing, it \u00a0gives the rim a seamless appearance &#8211; no beginning, no ending.\u00a0Looks great. It&#8217;s a simple tool, the tool end is a flat piece of metal with a hole, or an eye.\u00a0It&#8217;s thin, so it\u00a0slides into that tight space without damaging the rim and the eye holds the lasher while it is\u00a0pulled into place.<\/p>\n<p>To securely anchor the lasher before lashing, insert the Lash Ender\u00a0between the rims and to the inside of the basket. Notice that the Lash Ender is on the outside of the rim filler (twisted seagrass in\u00a0this basket). Un-thread the Lash Ender and, working from the outside of the basket, slide it straight up under the outside rim and flat against the wall of the basket. Re-thread the Lash Ender and pull it straight down. Now the\u00a0lasher is hair pinned over the basket wall and under the rim with the tail on the outside of the basket. There are lots of lashing techniques, but basically lashing is wrapping the rim securely against the rim row. This is done by inserting the lasher into the space between two stakes (and between the rim row and top row of weaving), pull the lasher taut, up and over the rim while\u00a0bringing it over one stake to the left or right. Now insert it\u00a0into that next space. It is easiest to lash from the outside to the inside of the basket.<\/p>\n<p>An awl or a packer can be used to open up any tight spots. There are also a couple of tools available to help with this.\u00a0I like to use the EZ Lasher to lash basket.<\/p>\n<p>The E<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15280 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_6056-300x101.jpg\" alt=\"100_6056\" width=\"300\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_6056-300x101.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_6056-1030x347.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_6056-1500x505.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_6056-705x237.jpg 705w, https:\/\/www.prairiewoodbasketry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/100_6056-450x152.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Z Lasher is a metal, needle-like tool: one end is pointed, much like a packer, and the other end is a cavity &#8211; the end of the lasher is tucked into this cavity. However, this is where the Lash Ender is really worth its price tag.<\/p>\n<p>Remove the EZ Lasher\u00a0and, using\u00a0the Lash Ender, repeat what you did when you anchored the\u00a0lasher. With the Lash Ender on the outside of the rim filler, insert it\u00a0between the rims and to the inside of the basket.\u00a0When it\u00a0is in place, thread the lasher through the eye.
