Actually Dijon Mustard and Dark Brown. Today I am dyeing reed, earthy colors for my basket “Montana<\/a><\/em>“, which I am teaching in October at the Association of Michigan Basket Weavers 2015 convention “Autumn Weavings”. \"100_6149\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The colors seem appropriate for their theme. Tomorrow I will dye blues and purples for “Surreptitious<\/a><\/em>“, which I am also teaching at the AMB convention, so I thought I would write\u00a0about dyeing reed.<\/p>\n

I typically use Rit dye, you know the kind you find at the grocery, craft and hardware store. I am often asked why I use Rit so first I’ll tackle that.<\/p>\n

1) I like the fact that Rit is non toxic and can be disposed of by pouring down the\u00a0drain. It’s also safe for septic systems. \u00a0I really don’t want a beautiful red coil of reed but worry about the disposing of a pot of toxic waste.<\/p>\n

2) I don’t have to wear a face mask when I dye with Rit. Though when I dye all day long I often do wear one, otherwise I \u00a0breath in dye powder and have alien colors when I blow my nose (sorry if that was TMI \ud83d\ude09 )<\/p>\n

3) I appreciate that reading Rit’s safety page<\/a> doesn’t scare me half to death.<\/p>\n

And now that we have covered health and safety …<\/p>\n

4) Rit is\u00a0easy to find locally, but if I want to shop from home I can order it online from Amazon or directly from Rit.<\/p>\n

5) The price is reasonable.<\/p>\n

6) Rit\u00a0has a great color selection and can easily be mixed to create new colors. \u00a0On the Rit website, they have two\u00a0amazing color charts, complete with recipes for about 600 colors. Check out these colors – just click on the inks below.<\/p>\n
